Detroit- The Motor City , Motown- whatever you call it, Detroit rocks. There is a lot of history with this city. Diana Ross , Aretha Franklin , Bob Seger , Eminem , Kid Rock , GM , Ford , and Chrysler all call Detroit home. On a recent visit, the 00krew decided to take a stroll through downtown and get a flavor for the city. We parked at The Greektown Casino(555 E. Lafayette). There are 3 casinos in Detroit(MGM Grand,Motorcity and Greektown). Greektown is a little closer to the center of town, which is why we started there. We asked the first person we saw where we should go and they directed us to Niki’s(734 Beaubien) for a cold one and the best pizza in town.
The pizza was good and the drinks were great at Niki’s. On the advice of the crowd at Niki’s, they suggested we cast our vote for the best coney’s in Detroit. There are two coney places right next door to each other, that boast the best coney’s in Detroit. We sampled a original coney from American Coney Island(114 W. Lafayette) and Lafayette Coney Island(118 W. Lafayette), after much thought and two delicious coney’s, the 00krew has to go with American Coney Island as the best.
There is alot going on in Detroit. The Redwings,Tigers and Lions all have stadiums located downtown. Downtown definitely happens on gameday. The Fox Theatre(2000 Woodward) always has a concert or show. There are some great views as you walk around downtown.
After walking around and soaking up the sights, the 00krew needed a beverage. We asked some people on the steet where to grab a cold one. They recommended Hockeytown Cafe(2301 Woodward). This place is a shrine to the Redwings and is decorated with every type of motorcycle.
The bartender at Hockeytown said if we wanted to get a true flavor of Detroit originals we had to go to the Bucharest Grill(2040 Park) and Cliff Bell’s Jazz Club(2030 Park).
When you go the Bucharest grill make sure you order a Chicken Shawarma. This chicken wrap is loaded with garlic and sauce and chicken. This is a delicious wrap, truly a Detroit original. On weekend nights you might wait 45 minutes to order one of these. After you finish,go next door to Ciff Bell’s Jazz Club. This 1935 post speakeasy is all original and is one great place. Live Jazz plays nightly. Definitely a must visit when in Detroit. If all the walking is not for you, don’t worry. Detroit has an elevated people mover that will take you where you want to go for $0.75. There are some great views from the people mover and platforms are easy to spot.
Next up on our adventure is The Old Shillelagh(349 Monroe). The Old Shillelagh is an old Irish pub that is a favorite of the locals.
The Old Shillelagh was fun,the drinks were good and Mandy, the bartender, was great. She suggested we try Jacoby’s(624 Brush),Detroit’s oldest Biergarten.
After a few at Jacoby’s the 00krew decided to go back to the Casino and drop some money at the tables before calling it a night. The people we ran into were great. It was also fun finding our way by asking people on the street where to go. Overall,Detroit is a great city. Make sure you check out upcoming events such as the Hydroplane races on the Detroit river, Motown Hoedown and Jazzfest. Check the City of Detroit website for dates. The 00krew will be back to Detroit soon for another adventure. Here are a few scenes of Detroit. Have fun and travel well.
